Here's what Lizzy had to say:
On the campaign trail... Students involved with HOPE took on campaigns around campus recycling, mobilizing students around the Darfur genocide issue, partnered with other student and community organizations to jointly work on campaigns, and worked with individual student film makers to help produce and show socially aware documentaries. HOPE's top priority is institutionalizing recycling at Hofstra University.
Small victories along the campaign trail keep members energized and organizations focused. Here are a couple of victories along the trail:
HOPE enlisted the help of an untraditional, but new and committed, ally in the campus campaign--fraternities and sororities. Greeks on campus began recycling in their houses as part of their commitment to bettering their community. In addition, HOPE's awareness raising campaign has been so successful they have been contacted by the administration because of the number of students talking about the issue. That's great organizing! Bumps along the way... Of course there have been bumps along the way. Like many campuses Hofstra's progressive community is fractured into many groups. Coalition building remains a challenge. Along with this newsletter CCW is starting a message board. If you've got tips on coalition building let us know. Click here to tell us about challenges, successes, and strategies from you campus. The Nuts and Bolts... Lizzy credits two fundamental tools for successful recruitment and keeping members accountable and invested: one-to-one conversations and relationship building and democratic decision making The Movement... At CCW we want to make sure no one overlooks the great organizing happening around the country and what that means about who we are as a generation. When asked if she feels like a part of a national movement of young people working to create a better world Lizzy enthusiastically said, "Yes, absolutely. I know this because every single member of our organization is passionate about our country and our environment." Lizzy and HOPE are helping reinforce what we know about politics, a group of passionate committed individuals can come together and change the world. CCW is proud of the work Lizzy and HOPE are doing. We love to hear about your stories, wins, losses and lessons. Make sure we hear from you. We're only an email away. And, of course, if you're looking for some ideas for campaigns you're working on, that is what we're here for.
