The 325,000 members of California Teachers Association (CTA) are represented by a powerful and passionate union advocate for students and public education. We partner with CTA to support that critical mission. From helping facilitate bold strategic planning sessions with the union’s leadership to leading summer school for organizers focused on developing union leaders' capacity to build powerful locals, our work helps ensure the voice of teachers and school employees are heard throughout the state.
In America’s most populous state, we are empowering the next generation of Californians to lead. In 2012 and 2013 alone, Campus Camp Wellstone visited six campuses, helping to make young Californians some of the strongest advocates for progressive public policy in the state.
In San Diego, the majority of the residents are people of color or immigrants, and community-based organizations were hungry to expand their experience and infrastructure to effectively engage all members of the quickly diversifying community. We worked with Engage San Diego to train community members to empower more voices in the democratic process. And we’re part of a sea-change in the region to support a more representative democracy.
Wellstone Action is also focused on changing the electorate, ensuring that those who hold office are held accountable by a powerful, organized progressive movement. One of our most successful partnerships in this effort is with Mobilize the Immigrant Vote (MIV), a nonprofit organization based in California whose mission is to build leadership and capacity within low-income immigrant communities around electoral organizing. They’ve turned to Wellstone Action to help build organizational capacity and gain the on-the-ground skills needed to advance this vision of building immigrant political power and representation, first in California, and then nationwide.
