Winning the Wellstone Way: Alabama

Alabama

From coast to coast, north to south, Wellstone Action empowers progressives with a framework to win the Wellstone Way in states across the country. Our work has inspired leaders and transformed organizations in all 50 states, including Alabama.

But we haven’t visited the Cotton State in a few years. Have an idea about how Wellstone Action could win progressive change in Alabama? We’d love to hear all about it.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Alaska

Alaska

Alaska’s geographic separation from the continental U.S. hasn’t stopped Wellstone Action from having a huge impact in the state. In 2012 alone, no fewer than five of our alumni won tough races to represent their community in the state legislature. Our candidate trainings empower progressives with the skills they need to win, from delivering an effective message to raising funds, and our victories in Alaska are proof-positive of how effective this work really is.

But it’s been a while since we made it to the Last Frontier State. So if you have an idea about how Wellstone Action can help win progressive change in Alaska, we’d love to hear all about it.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Arizona

Arizona

Last year, a Wellstone Action alumna running for office in Arizona was forced to bring her birth certificate to court to prove her citizenship before her name would be put on the ballot. It’s just one example of an unfair truth; first- and second-generation immigrants face unique challenging when they decide to run for office.  Along with our partner, New American Leaders Project, we’re in Arizona confronting these injustices head-on. and shaping the next generation of progressive leaders that reflect the changing face of the state.

Near Scottsdale, we worked on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Reservation, in partnership with the National Congress of American Indians, to train community members to engage new voters, and get out the vote across Indian Country. Our Native American Leadership Program is committed to developing Native leaders, and recognizes and honors that Native American people are natural organizers, messengers, and storytellers, with a community power that is rooted in relationships. And our program in Arizona equipped Native leaders to have a powerful voice in the 2012 election.

Winning the Wellstone Way: California

California

The 325,000 members of California Teachers Association (CTA) are represented by a powerful and passionate union advocate for students and public education. We partner with CTA to support that critical mission.  From helping facilitate bold strategic planning sessions with the union’s leadership to leading summer school for organizers focused on developing union leaders' capacity to build powerful locals, our work helps ensure the voice of teachers and school employees are heard throughout the state.

In America’s most populous state, we are empowering the next generation of Californians to lead. In 2012 and 2013 alone, Campus Camp Wellstone visited six campuses, helping to make young Californians some of the strongest advocates for progressive public policy in the state.

In San Diego, the majority of the residents are people of color or immigrants, and community-based organizations were hungry to expand their experience and infrastructure to effectively engage all members of the quickly diversifying community. We worked with Engage San Diego to train community members to empower more voices in the democratic process. And we’re part of a sea-change in the region to support a more representative democracy.

Wellstone Action is also focused on changing the electorate, ensuring that those who hold office are held accountable by a powerful, organized progressive movement. One of our most successful partnerships in this effort is with Mobilize the Immigrant Vote (MIV), a nonprofit organization based in California whose mission is to build leadership and capacity within low-income immigrant communities around electoral organizing. They’ve turned to Wellstone Action to help build organizational capacity and gain the on-the-ground skills needed to advance this vision of building immigrant political power and representation, first in California, and then nationwide.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Colorado

Colorado

Wellstone Action’s Native American Leadership Program (NALP) was created by, with, and for Native leaders. NALP is committed to developing Native leaders, and  our all-Native training team partners with tribes and Native organizations and nations across Colorado to engage Native leaders and effect positive change through community-based organizing, advocacy, public policy, and nonpartisan electoral work.

Western Organization of Resource Councils (WORC) is a network of grassroots organizations dedicated to advancing a democratic, sustainable, and just society through community action. With offices in Montana, Colorado, and D.C., their work takes constant planning, and strategizing. Wellstone Action is a long-term partner with WORC, providing training for their staff and volunteer leaders, both in their member groups such as the Western Colorado Congress, and for their overall network. This partnership provides strategic planning and capacity building on campaign and issue organizing and provides technical assistance and leadership development directly to their campaigns for change.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Connecticut

Connecticut

Building an army of progressive elected officials across a state takes a lot of work, planning, and focus. From recruitment, to training, and candidate support, it takes a long view to systematically elect progressives and change the locus of power in the state, and it’s why we do this work long before, and well beyond, Election Day. Our work in Connecticut with the Working Families Organization has focused on building a pipeline of progressives dedicated to their mission of advancing an agenda of democracy, equality, and sustainability. And we’re not done yet.

Winning the Wellstone Way: District of Columbia

District of Columbia

In our nation’s Capital, Wellstone Action is front and center in the fight to build a winning progressive movement.. When it comes to the leading political leadership and movement-building organizations in the district, you name it and we’re probably working hand-in-hand with them to win change, the Wellstone Way. Here are just a few examples:

  • We partner with Generation Progress to make young Americans some of the strongest advocates for progressive public policy in the country. It's transformational work, as Anne Johnson,  Generation Progress Executive Director says "Wellstone Action's partnership with Campus Progress, an organization dedicated to amplifying the voices of young people, has proven to be an absolutely vital part of our work to give young people the skills and experience they need to promote bold, generational, progressive solutions for their community, state, and country."
  • Our collaboration with State Voices makes us a key ally in the fight to strengthen our democracy and expand the electorate. As, Tracy Sturdivant, Executive Director, State Voices, explains “Wellstone is one of the premier leadership development organizations in our movement. They’re a key partner for State Voices, working closely with our civic engagement tables to develop diverse leaders and position them to make real, lasting change. Their work is thoughtful and impactful, and together, we’re achieving long-term, sustainable change in the states.”

Winning the Wellstone Way: Florida

Florida

For many years now, Florida has flickered brightly in that bottom corner of the map, the place to pay attention to if you want to gauge our country’s political temperature. One of our biggest partners in the Sunshine State is Florida New Majority (FNM). With a laser focus on blending voter engagement with social justice organizing, combined with its pursuit of innovative partnerships, FNM is transforming the locus of power in Florida FNM’s executive director, Gihan Perera explains our relationship best, “We came to Wellstone for a very particular reason – digging in deeper into Wellstone’s core values of authentic leadership, of change rooted in community, of winning on what matters.” And our work is making a big difference; in 2012, FNM’s field program (in concert with SEIU) contacted over 300,000 voters and delivered a progressive victory for the entire country.

We’re in Florida all the time, (and not just because more than a couple Wellstone Actioners are big fans of Harry Potter World). Our work with labor and community-based organizations brings us to the state frequently, as does an annual Camp Wellstone and frequent Campus Camp Wellstones.

Illinois

Wellstone Action loves traveling to DuPage County, just outside of Chicago, for a Camp Wellstone every other year. At the 2.5 day Camp, Illinoisans learn to win progressive change, the Wellstone Way.

  • We teach candidates the nuts and bolts of running—and winning—a progressive campaign. Topics of focus include: campaign planning and budgeting; writing and delivering a stump speech; fundraising; and canvassing, among many more.

  • We teach campaign workers and staff the skills it takes to manage a successful progressive campaign. Topics of focus include: message development and delivery; earned and paid media; targeting; and direct voter contact.

  • We teach organizers the nuts and bolts of winning progressive change on community-based issues. We believe that the only way to build power is in partnership with others—not by ourselves. If you are connected to a group or organization that wants to make real change on a particular issue in your community, this is the right place for you.

Chicago is home to Wellstone Action’s own, Principal of Movement Building, Adriana Barboza, and we work in close partnership with many of the city’s leading immigrant and worker rights organizations.

In Maine, we continued the fight for marriage equality by partnering with Mainers United for Marriage to move voters and win this campaign. No state has ever approved same-sex marriage by popular vote. This is an unprecedented and heart-bursting victory for Mainers, and for all of us.

Thanks to a fantastic Camp Wellstone in January 2012, we empowered over 40 Mainers to win on big campaigns and with leading organizations. That work led four of our alumni to win tough races to represent their communities in elected office.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Massachusetts

Massachusetts

At age 22, Alex Morse of Holyoke, MA is the youngest-ever mayor elected in Massachusetts, and the youngest openly gay mayor in the nation. He’s also a Wellstone Action alum.  “Wellstone Action gave me the foundation to run an effective grassroots campaign. It taught me everything, from base building to finance to fundraising to media to the campaign timeline,” explains Alex.

Our Movement-Building Program heads to Boston every year to lead the MIRA (Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition) Democracy School, training a new generation of advocates to win on social justice issues.

Our strong, multi-pronged, partnership with the state’s leading teachers union, Massachusetts Teachers Association, is helping this coalition of 110,000 educators build capacity and plan for a bold future organizing and advocating on behalf of its members – and students across the state.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Michigan

Michigan

In a state that once served as the world’s industrial capitol and now struggles to rebound from its biggest city’s bankruptcy, Wellstone Action is working to build a thriving, progressive future for its citizens.

We’re as busy in Michigan as we are in almost any other part of the country. You can find Wellstone Action leading massive Camp Wellstones, partnering with groups like Unity Michigan, and running Campus Camp Wellstones at colleges across the state.

One of our boldest partnerships is with the Michigan Education Association (MEA). When the conservative, lame-duck, legislature sneaked Right to Work legislation into law in December 2012, MEA dedicated itself to fighting back. They chose to partner with Wellstone Action right away to train their professional staff. In 2013 alone, we’ve been to Michigan nearly a half-dozen times for Organizing Bootcamps and Train-the-Trainers that are all helping MEA engage their members in new and effective ways.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Minnesota

Minnesota

Wellstone Action’s home base and where it all began. Throw a ball into the chambers of the Minnesota legislature and you’re likely to hit a Wellstone Action alum; in 2012 alone, over 42 of our alumni won elected office.

We lead Camp Wellstones, host Campus Camp Wellstones, partner with labor organizations, and work in Indian Country – and that’s all in an average month.

A few projects, partnerships, and alumni that we’re particularly proud of:

  • Several senior staff on the Minnesotans United for All Families campaign, including campaign manager Richard Carlbom, were trained by Wellstone Action. And in addition to training the entire field staff and volunteer leaders, several Wellstone staff took leaves to help drive the campaign into the home stretch. And we won. After more than 30 straight defeats at the ballot box, this was a historic first in the fight to ultimately win marriage equality.
  • We are changing the choices at the ballot box in Minnesota, and have helped progressive leaders like Susan Allen, Rena Moran, and Tim Walz, win their elections.

Winning the Wellstone Way: New Hampshire

New Hampshire

After the 2010 election, progressives in New Hampshire found themselves backed against a corner as conservatives took control of the State House by a wide margin, 298-104.  Taking back that many seats in a single election cycle felt like an insurmountable task, but that’s exactly what progressive groups in New Hampshire endeavored to do in 2012 - and that’s exactly where Wellstone Action could help them win. Together, we brought to life our vision of a comprehensive, collaborative political leadership pipeline – and we won.

Our work in New Hampshire proved what Wellstone Action is all about: elected office is not just the domain of the wealthy and well connected. Regular people can run – and win – when armed with the hard skills and the right support to bring their progressive vision for change forward, the Wellstone Way.

New York

In New York, we took back the State Senate, with Cecilia Tkaczyk (and two other Wellstone alums!) winning tough victories as a result of our steadfast partnership with Working Families Party to create a viable pipeline of progressive leaders. We return to the Empire State with the Working Families Party frequently, often to host Camp Wellstones that provide candidates, campaign staff, and grassroots organizers with a framework and the hard skills to win progressive change.

Winning the Wellstone Way: North Carolina

North Carolina

Yadkin County, North Carolina, is a conservative and rural working-class area. So it’s probably not where you’d expect to find the group called El Cambio, a youth-empowerment organization that fights for education and human rights for immigrants and communities of color.  But that’s exactly where El Cambio has its roots, and every day they are organizing and fighting to be changemakers in North Carolina with the help of Wellstone Action. Camp Wellstone, along with our partners at Generation Progress, came to town for a grassroots organizing training with El Cambio. It was a two-day training that helped shape the organization as an effective and focused leader for change.

Winning the Wellstone Way: North Dakota

North Dakota

In North Dakota, Wellstone Action trainer Prairie Rose Seminole and her team at Native Vote brought a victory for Heidi Heitkamp, flipping that seat to elect the first female U.S. Senator in North Dakota's history. "As a trainer, my job is to elevate political savvy at the grassroots. We have something to say about the political process and there’s something we can do about it. We can change the dynamics of the power struggle between those who are profiting and those whose backs are breaking for that profit. But we have to take our frustrations and create constructive tools in organizing. So I love it when we have 'Ah-hah' moments at trainings when folks see that they are prepared and equipped to take ownership and really make a big change in their community," says Prairie Rose. You can read her full story here.

Our Ohio Camp Wellstones are helping to build a grassroots ground game in Ohio that’s transforming the state’s politics.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Texas

Texas

Don’t mess with Texas. Don’t mess with Wellstone. Texas, like a lot of the nation, is undergoing a colossal demographic shift. The second-largest state (by square miles and by population), working in Texas means working across regions and within communities to strengthen democratic participation amongst new and old residents. So we’ve worked with the Texas Civic Engagement Table to lead trainings in both English and in Spanish, in big cities and on the border, to develop new leaders and engage more Texans in the democratic process.

Texas is changing, and is undergoing a progressive resurgence we haven’t seen in decades. Battleground Texas Executive Director and Wellstone Action Alumna Jenn Brown is at the forefront of this fight. For everyone inspired and activated by what has been happening in Texas, Camp Wellstone went to Houston to give progressives the training and tools needed to keep winning the change that improves people’s lives.

At Camp Wellstone, we give both candidates and campaign staff a framework for winning the Wellstone Way, from values-based messaging to targeting voters, to fundraising, to working with the media.  And our Grassroots Organizing track gives community leaders new skills to lead their communities towards sustained progressive change.

United States

We make change happen. Across the country, at hundreds of trainings, events, and strategy sessions every year, Wellstone Action inspires leaders and transforms organizations to win progressive change, the Wellstone Way.

Winning the Wellstone Way: Virginia

Virginia

Our 2013 Camp Wellstone in Fredericksburg empowered over 75 Virginians to win progressive change, the Wellstone Way. The Camp had three tracks, one for candidates, one for campaign staffers, and one for grassroots organizers.

The battle for the political heart of Wisconsin has been the focus of the nation. From massive protests at the Capitol Building, to recounts, recalls, and critical elections, the Badger State is going through a momentous political battle. And Wellstone Action is proud to stick with progressives in the state every step of the way.

You can find us in Wisconsin all the time, and not just because we’re good neighbors. Every year, we cross the border for a Camp Wellstone that gives candidates, campaigners, and activists a framework for winning the Wellstone Way. Meanwhile, we work with SEIU in the state to train and empower their organizers to turn out more voters to back candidates that support Wisconsin workers.

Through both traditional Campus Camp Wellstones, and through our Native American Leadership Program work on campuses, we are engaging more young Wisconsinites than ever before on the issues that will define the state, and country’s future.
