Wellstone Action and Wellstone Action Fund combine to form a national center for training and leadership development for the progressive movement. Founded in January 2003, Wellstone Action's mission is to honor the legacy of Paul and Sheila Wellstone by continuing their work through training, educating, mobilizing and organizing a vast network of progressive individuals and organizations.
The Wellstone Action Fund is the 501c(3) sister organization of Wellstone Action. The Wellstone Action Fund is committed to continuing the work of Paul and Sheila Wellstone by training and empowering underrepresented communities to engage in civic life. The NALP organizer will work directly with the NALP Director to strengthen Native American leadership and civic participation across the country.
Internship responsibilities:
- Assist in logistical planning for upcoming trainings
- Perform detailed research projects (e.g. how do the voting requirements for Native Americans differ by state?)
- Serve as a trainer with other Wellstone Action Fund programs
- Perform critical assessment of current policy issues facing Indian Country
- Help to build and maintain relationships within tribal communities
- Assist in the creation of curriculum to use in related trainings
- Assist the NALP Director with other projects, as needed
Requirements:
- 10 – 20 hrs/week (September through December)
- Work will mainly be performed in Wellstone Action St. Paul office location; some travel may be required (at no cost to the applicant)
- Knowledge of grassroots organizing
- Experience working in Native American communities
- Commitment to social justice
- Strong communication skills
- Strong writing and research skills
- Ability to be organized, highly motivated, self-driven, work independently and meet deadlines
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point applications and basic PC skills
- Sense of humor, flexibility and commitment to a fun working environment
- Political Science, American Indian Studies majors preferred
This is a part-time, unpaid position.
